The Flack School is a Washington DC preforming arts high school. It houses the necessary amenity's to allow the gifted children of the DMV to excel in their field.
During this studio we worked closely with the administration at the Duke Ellington School to understand how complex programing works within a high school. Movement was a major design idea for the school. The goal of the street front views was to allow rehearsal spaces to be admired by pedestrians.
The biggest piece of this puzzle was the three story theater and connecting fly tower. Located on the ground floor were back of house theater spaces such as dressing rooms and control rooms. As the building ascends, the anchor structure behind the theater becomes the dedicated classrooms.

The site is located directly adjacent to Howard University campus. The surrounding buildings are mostly commercial buildings or Howards student housing. The massing in yellow is a proposal for another student housing and commercial building that adds to the existing fabric of the neighborhood.
