VCOM is a healthcare clinic in Blacksburg, VA. The purpose is to create an environment where Virginia Tech students can work and learn in a real world environment. Incorporating aspects of biophilia is a great way to improve the stress levels of building occupants. Biophilic design has also been shown to greatly improve recovery time of patients.
Water is a crucial element used throughout the design. These features are used as a cooling device and a stress reliever. Most importantly it creates an ambient white noise that helps disrupt any sensitive information from being overheard by other patients.
There is a small drainage pond that exists on the site. This pond was expanded to enhance outdoor seating areas with views that enhance the occupant's experience.
